Republic street

REPUBLIC STREET
The commercial expansion of Marseille in the 19th century led to a radical change in the development of the city. The Old Port can no longer contain all the traffic and the construction of a second port becomes inevitable.

It is to facilitate the connection between the two ports that will start in 1862 the work of the rue Impériale, now called REpublic Street.
935 houses will be destroyed, 61 streets will disappear entirely or partially, and even the hill will be cut to build this street!

Easily recognizable Haussmann style, the Rue Impériale wanted to attrack the high society of Marseille.
Even today, and despite all the efforts of investors, this historic street is still struggling to take off.
It remains a nice walk that I propose to go back to tell you its History and secrets. From one port to another we will see together the businesses and initiatives that make it live.
